The Caltagirone Circular Economy Hub

The Caltagirone Circular Economy Hub

In the  Municipality of Caltagirone, in the heart of Sicily, Renovo is creating a technology hub composed of three integrated plants, in pursuit of renewable energy, the use of local natural resources and waste and green chemistry

Renovo aims to:
  • to recover valuable resources coming directly from the Sicilian territory such as scrap of artichoke and marigold; a plant that Renovo began cultivating in the marginal land (and from which honey can also be obtained)
  • used for lumber that was disposed of at Northern Italy, causing significant environmental impacts due to transport, for the production of pressed pallets made exclusively with wood after use
  • to promote the job placement of disadvantaged staff (at a regime, the Circle of the Circular Economy will offer new employment to approximately 100 people)
An innovative circular economy project founded on the local community’s own value.
According to our estimates, the entire project will generate a savings of approximately 33,000 tons of CO2 a year, considering the benefits deriving from renewable energy and the recycling of post-consumption wood.

no food-use biomass will be used.

In the heart of Sicily, in the municipality of Caltagirone Renovo, is developing a technology center consisting of three integrated plants, renewable energies, the use of natural resources and waste of land and of green chemistry
  • a cogeneration plant with a capacity of 1 MWe and 4MWth fuelled bybiomass obtained from agricultural and forest waste harvested from  local sources (within 70 km of the plant)
  • A plant for the production of pressed pallets made exclusively with wood after use: thanks to a agreement signed with CONAI, Renovo will be able to recycle thousands of tons of post-consumer wood produced every year in Sicily, giving them a new life in the form of pressed ecological pallets.
  • A plant for the extraction of two secondary chemical compounds developed in collaboration with the CNR allows the extraction of pectin and limonene from orange paste, a widespread agroindustrial waste spread in Sicily and which today requires high disposal costs

Partnership with the Il Nodo Social Cooperative

In addition, from the social standpoint, we have struck a partnership with the Il Nodo Social Cooperative based in Catania to promote the inclusion of disadvantaged workers in the workforce. When fully operational, the Circular Economy Hub will offer new jobs to approximately 100 individuals.

Legambiente and the ethical real-estate fund Green Star – Bioenergy Sub-fund.

The renewable energy component of the Circular Economy Hub was created in part with the involvement of the ethical real-estate fund Green Star – Bioenergy Sub-fund.
An innovative project that Legambiente, committed to promoting the circular economy in Italy, supports as partner.
